Frequently Asked Questions
Your questions answered here!
Sivananda Yoga looks intimidating and the first pose is the headstand! What if I can't do this pose and I am scared?
Many of our students start out without knowing how to do the headstand, and it is not a pre-requisite to attend the class. In fact, even though Sivananda Yoga focuses on a set sequence, the poses are not the final goal of the practice. We focus on the breath and the mind, and we use the body to help us reach a certain state of relaxation through the shapes of the asana (postures). For beginner's classes in Sivananda Yoga, you will be taught modifications to the poses and through regular practice, you will see improvements in your postures and perhaps one day do the headstand!
Where are the classes held? Do you have a studio?
I am an independent teacher and I hold the 90 min Sivananda Yoga classes at The Mysore Haus, located across City Square Mall (nearest station is Farrer Park). The studio is located on the second floor.
At the same time, I am teaching Hatha Yoga at The Awareness Hub at Bras Basah Complex. These classes are not full Sivananda Yoga classes but are inspired by the teachings and lineage of the Sivananda and Bihar School of Yoga.
If you are interested to conduct a class for your company, we can look at suitable spaces either at your office or at a studio space near to you.
Are mats provided at the studio?
Yes, mats, props and cleaning material are provided.
For hygiene purposes, you are encouraged to bring a yoga towel for your practice (to lay over the mat).
Please help to clean the mats after you've used them!
Do you have any outdoor classes?
Currently there are no outdoor classes but who knows in the future!
Why do we chant in the beginning and after the class?
The chanting in the beginning of a yoga class is a tradition in the lineage of Swami Sivananda. As sanskrit is considered a sacred language in the Hindu tradition, the chanting of mantras in the beginning of the class is meant to invoke grounding energies to the class.
